I am going to talk first about overseas compare to the domestic areas. My first travel alone to overseas was to Saipan island in 1997. The main purpose was getting a diving license. I joined a tour in the local diving school. I felt Japanese soldiers spirits in a hotel and in the sea, although it was invisible. Many young Japanese men died in the sea during world warII. It is about 80 years ago (at then, only after 52 years from the war ended). The 2nd opportunity of lonely travel to another country was Ireland. And many times to Scotland...
Despite those experiences, I can not travel alone in Japan somewhat. I never go to Onsen or Ryokan alone. It is impossible psychologically. The reason maybe, it is too lonely to enjoy. I can not enjoy even in Kyoto alone. Woman's lonely trip to Kyoto sounds cool though I don't like it.
I have no many travel experiences in Japan despite I am Japanese. Staying at hotels in Japan would be less than 5 places in my past. I dislike traveling alone in Japan anyway.
